We once asked a friend how he got rid of his beer belly. “Stopped drinking beer” he laughed, looking at his horrid hump. Then he patted it like it was his pet.

For those who want to battle the bulge, but don’t want to get rid of the beer or the wine, here are a few points to think about. First up, recognise the problem between you are your goals. This might sound silly and obvious but so many refuse to see that it’s alcohol consumption that is their problem, plus in excess it make you more likely to develop a heart attack or Type 2 Diabetes.

Secondly remember that it’s not just about the volume of alcohol that you drink, it’s also about the high-fat foods you desire post-drinking, kebabs, pizzas, deep fried foods and suchlike.

Finally, know that you are not alone. Be honest with yourself and if you know anyone whose part piece is to balance a pint glass on their belly whilst standing up, be honest with them and have a private word about what they are actually doing to themselves internally. You might just save their life.
